Uma is the daughter of Robert Thurman who is now a professor of Indo-Tibetan studies in University of Columbia. He was the first American to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk. Uma and her siblings were brought up in a Buddhist environment. Her name "Uma Karuna" was derived from Tibetan and Sanskrit name. Though she doesn't call herself a "real" buddhist Uma admits that Buddhism has great influence on her life.
